Prosthetics – Custom Prosthetic Services In MA, RI, NH
The field of prosthetics involves the design, fabrication, and fitting of artificial limbs (prostheses) intended to replace a portion of the body that has been lost through amputation or was absent at birth (congenital). For example, this may range from a cosmetic replacement to a prosthetic or myoelectric hand or arm.
Our prosthetic patients are provided with high-tech lightweight materials, flexible sockets, and energy storing feet. We are also certified to fit the newest innovations in upper limb and lower limb prosthetics.
Many manufacturers have developed micro-processor knee units that have made a remarkable difference for many above-the-knee amputees. The on board computer reads the patients' gait and adjusts automatically to changes in speed, slope and overall cadence.
For example, Otto Bock offers the Otto Bock "C-Leg"
, Ossur offers the "Rheo Knee"
, Endolite offers the "Orion Knee"
, Freedom Innovations offers the "Plie' MPC Knee"
and there are other options, as well. Our prosthetists can discuss the advantages of each with you.
For below-the-knee amputees there have been several advances in technology as well that we are certified to fit, including the "Harmony System"
from Otto Bock and the "LimbLogic System"
from Ohio Willow Wood. These systems manage limb-volume loss through a vacuum system and result in significantly more comfort and fewer adjustments.
For our upper limb patients we provide the full spectrum of restorations. This would fall under one of three categories:
- Cosmetic Restoration - This is a prosthesis that matches the non-amputated side perfectly in terms of skin tone, veins, age spots, etc.
- Body-Powered - This prosthesis utilizes the patient's residual muscles (for example, shoulders and triceps) to activate the hand or elbow.
- Myoelectric - Electrodes implanted in the socket pick up electrical impulses from the muscles to activate the hand and/or elbow.
Many of our patients come to us, not only from around the country, but around the world, as well. For these patients who have to travel long distances, we have a special program whereby we can fit a prosthesis in 2 to 3 days. We can also assist in making travel and hotel reservations when needed.
